We are a farmstead. 😄 We started out as a homestead. There are many different opinions out there for what exactly constitutes the difference between homesteads, farms, and farmsteads but here's how we interpret it: A homestead is primarily focused on self-sufficiency for one or more families on a single property. Farms are strictly commercial enterprises, and a farmstead is somewhere in between. We farm to provide sustenance for our family in addition to financial provision.
No, but let us explain why that label doesn't hold as much value as it once did and why we have chosen not to pursue it. Rest assured, we are committed to the principles of organic agriculture- We do not use any synthetic/chemical pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and we go well beyond the "standard" of animal welfare practices. Though it was well-meaning in its conception, the sad truth now is that the organic certification program has unfortunately become just another gatekeeper for small farms that already struggle to stretch every dollar allowing juggernaut factory farms and major food corporations to prevent "the little guy" from taking even a fraction of their profit margins.
Did you know indoor hydroponics farms can be certified organic? Not that we have anything against innovation, but it seems a bit silly to us that produce that has never even been in soil (its roots are suspended in a chemical solution) or felt a ray of real sunlight can be certified as "the most natural form of production".
There are so many redundant rules to obtaining and maintaining organic certification that it becomes quite counterproductive for small operations. For example, in order to use animal manure sources in your compost you must rigorously document times and temperatures of compost piles while keeping them within a certain temperature range for a certain time period in order to use it. That just seems tedious and unnecessary to us. Organic certified farmers are not even required to use organic seeds, they simply must show that they have searched multiple sources for organic seeds of whatever variety they want to plant and found them unavailable (so in reality, much of the "certified organic" produce you consume from large producers isn't even from organic seeds!). There are inconsistent rules about testing soil deficiencies before adding minerals, covering the ground, uncovering the ground, etc.
All of these arbitrary rules and regulations tend to encourage farmers to just "pencil whip" the documentation and tell the government what it wants to hear ("We're doing everything your way *WINK WINK*") rather than actually doing what is best for the consumer and the environment.
We'll let YOU be the judge. What is more important to you- That your food has a nice, shiny sticker on it saying the government approves of it, or knowing WHO grew/handled/packaged your food, what kind of person they are and what values they demonstrate, and WHERE exactly it came from (down the road, or across the country). Our family started growing food for the same reason you want the most natural, healthy, nutrient-dense, pollutant-free food out there- Because that's what we want too.
We won't say no outright, just not yet. Our farmstead is also our home. While we value transparency we also believe in a reasonable expectation of privacy. We are more than happy to answer any questions you have about our methods and practices, however we only allow visitors under special circumstances at this time. We hope to host open house events for CSA members in the future!
Unfortunately not at this time, we are primarily focused on supporting the needs of our immediate community and surrounding area. We do ship non-perishable items though!
Yes, you can! If we sell out of a certain product we use the "first come, first serve" approach and signing up on our wait list will hold your place "in line" and give you priority. If you pre-order we will update you with when you can expect your order to be ready as soon as possible.
You can reach out to us directly and we will get back to you as soon as possible!
